The Independent Youth Housing Program (IYHP) provides rental assistance, related housing costs and case management to eligible young adults, ages 18-24, who have been a dependent of the state or federally recognized tribal foster care system prior to age 18.

Eligibility

  • Age 18-24. Age can be shown by legal documents, official records, or written or oral attestation from a service provider or other credible source. A state ID is not the only document accepted, and we can help get documents.
  • Income. Individual or household total annual income must not exceed 50% of the area median income, reevaluated at least twice a year.
  • State dependency. The person must have been a dependent of the state of Washington under chapter 13.34 RCW, or in the custody of a federally recognized Indian tribe under the judgment of any tribe in an Indian child custody proceeding, at any time before their 18th birthday. This can be confirmed in writing by the DCYF Regional Independent Living Coordinator, the Indian Child Welfare Director or designated contact, or the ORIA Unaccompanied Refugee Minors Program Manager, or by a Washington State local dependency court order dated before the 18th birthday.
